Back in March when Covid-19 was on the incline and everyone was starting to go a little stir crazy from being housebound, we decided to start a little project. We had heard of many photographers doing something called Curbside Photos for families and couples, where they would drive up to someone’s house, take a photo of them on their front steps, edit the photo, and then give it to them. We saw lots of it in the media and people seemed to be really supportive of it. When photography friends here in Sudbury (PhotoCaptiva) did it and had such a great turn out, we wanted to offer the same thing, but for local dancers! We called ours #photosfromthecurb to make it a little different. The goal was to give the dancers something to look forward to, to get creative and plan their own pose, and to get one free photo out of it. All we had to do was plan our driving route from house to house, take a photo or two, and edit them. Sounds pretty easy, right? But... Covid-19 had different plans...

We scheduled the photos for the last weekend of March, and had somewhere between 25 and 30 dancers in the Sudbury area sign up. We started planning our route of driving from house to house, but then of course all non-essential businesses were told to close, and so we had to postpone. We were so bummed! As much as it was going to be fun for the kids, we were also looking forward to it. Mike made multiple calls to the government talking to different people asking if it could still be done. We knew distance was important and with photography it would be easy, especially with zoom lenses, but it was still a no-go. Rules are rules! So, we tried to wait patiently… Or as patiently as possible…

Then April passed…

And May passed…

Then June came…

...And FINALLY things started to slowly re-open. As soon as phase 2 began and photography was given the go-ahead, emails were sent and the planning re-started! We had three full evenings set up for different regions. One night was spent in the Valley and Garson. Another night was spent in Lively and the south end of Sudbury. The last night was spent in the New Sudbury area. We also had a couple of dancers out in Alban, which is a little farther than the rest of the dancers lol (good thing we enjoy drives hehehe). But we just so happened to have a meeting out there one evening, which made it a little more convenient. They were our first official shoot back and it was so exciting! Mike had to keep reminding himself not to forget his camera bag because it had been so long since he had done a shoot. Now would be a good time to crack a joke about his camera having a layer of dust on it, but that would never be true because he doesn’t go many days without using it for something lol! Someway! Somehow!

It felt so good getting out to do these! We loved seeing familiar faces, as well as new ones. Plus the joy it brought them and their parents was an added bonus! It was great meeting more of the Sudbury dance community and seeing their talent! No matter how many dancers we work with, we are always wow’d by what they bring to their shoots. It was super impressive seeing the creativity and the thought that they all put into their posing and photos. They came ready!

Thank you to each and every one of you for making it so enjoyable for us!!

We even had a couple dance model guests who added an extra bit of fun to our “job”! You won’t want to miss that photo at the end.

Check out all the talent below!
