My name is Abby Sugeng; I’m 16 years old and I’m from Sudbury, Ontario. I started dancing recreationally at the age of 5, and competitively at the age of 10. Currently, I am a competitive dancer on the senior team at Happiness Is Dancing. What I love most about dance is the time that I spend in the studio, at shows, and competitions with my teammates. The friendships created through dance are the most important thing to me, as these are friendships that I will take with me long after the stage lights go dim.
Dance has given me opportunities to place overall in competitions, win scholarships, and compete for national titles in 2017, 2018, 2019, and again in 2022. I have also attended a number of summer programs in Toronto to further expand my training. The opportunities for personal growth through these experiences, as well as through countless practices and rehearsals in the studio, have helped me persevere through difficulty and push myself to set new goals and work harder.
The ability to highlight the hard work, dedication, and intense training that goes into dancing was what motivated me to apply to be an ambassador this year. The opportunity to be a featured dancer for View Dance Challenge was an experience that also greatly inspired my love and appreciation for dance photography. Dance photography showcases the strength, beauty, and fearlessness of dancers, and being a part of the creation of this artwork has been both challenging and rewarding.
